Summary Nightwood is not only a classic of modernist literature, but was also acknowledged by T. S. Eliot as one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century. Our new collector’s edition has been exclusively designed and crafted for Faber Members, with reproduced cover artwork based on the 1950s design, the first edition to include Eliot’s own introduction. First published in 1936 by Faber, after Emily Holmes Coleman (author of The Shutter of Snow) persuaded T. S. Eliot to take it on, Nightwood tells the stories of the love-lives of a group of Americans and Europeans in Paris in the 1920s – an exotic, night-time underworld, eccentric, seedy and beautiful. Formally experimental and one of the earliest novels to explicitly portray queer people and relationships, the influence of Djuna Barnes has been (and continues to be) exceptional – securing Nightwood a place in an alternative canon of subversive modern classics. This Members Edition is printed on Munken Premium wood-free paper and the adapted dust jacket encloses a beautifully bound hardback with a Paris Blue cover and gold foiled spine, in a close replication of the original 1950s edition. This Members edition will be a treasured gift to those who loved the book, and those discovering it for the first time.
